How accurate is IP-based location?
IP geolocation is typically accurate to the city or region level — usually a 5–50 km radius. Accuracy depends on the ISP's published address and the geolocation database used. For exact coordinates, enable GPS.
How accurate is GPS?
Modern smartphones provide GPS accuracy within 3–5 meters outdoors. Indoor accuracy is typically much worse. The tool shows the reported accuracy alongside each reading.
How do I verify my VPN or proxy is actually working?
Check three signals on this page:

Why do timezone and language reveal my location?
Your browser sends your timezone and preferred languages to every site you visit. Even if your IP is hidden by a VPN, these signals can betray your real region — for example, a Tokyo IP paired with `America/Los_Angeles` timezone is a giveaway. Check the browser environment section to see what you're sending.
What are good privacy practices for location data?
- Always prefer HTTPS sites — your IP is sent regardless, but at least the rest of the request is encrypted.
- Disable WebRTC in your browser (or use a uBlock Origin rule) if you use a VPN — it's the most common source of IP leaks.
- Match your browser timezone to your VPN exit's timezone.
- Use private/incognito browsing to avoid third-party cookie correlation.
What happens if the geolocation APIs are unavailable?
The site falls back through several layers:
- Server-side IP detection (this site's own endpoint) is tried first — it doesn't depend on any third-party API.
- ipapi.co is queried for city/region/country if reachable.
- Browser timezone is used as a last-resort coarse approximation.
- GPS always takes precedence over IP-based estimates when permitted.
